The Panhandle
The Okavango River flows south into Botswana from the Angolan Highalnds after crossing Namibia's Caprivi Strip.
The panhandle is the 70 kilometres of watercourse before the Okavango fans out into the alluvial plain of the famed Okavango Delta.
The river gradient is low and the river is constrained by its steep banks. Like a giant meandering serpent, it snakes its way to the delta.
From the river's surface tall banks of elephant grass and papyrus shield the view so it's not a prime lcation for game viewing. However, the bird life is prolific and a major drawcard for photographers.
We flew from Maun into Shakawe and stayed downriver at Xaro Camp.
