Botswana - Okavango Delta

World Heritage Site #1000

In June 2014, UNESCO 'inscribed' the Okavango Delta as the 1,000th World Heritage Site.

Summer rainfall in the remote Angola highlands flushes down the Okavango River, meandering and oozing through the swamps and channels of the Okavango Delta.  Each year a trickle flow of water starts in March and turns to a flood which peaks in July and August.

What would otherwise be dry Kalahari sand becomes a intricate maze of lakes, canals, marsh lands and islands. Its gift of fertility is a haven for wildlife and a jewel for photographers.

Warning: The predators tab has some graphic animal violence images.
