Humpback Whales - Mothers & Calves

Bedroom & Nursery

In Tonga's warm tropical waters humpback whales mate and 11 months later the females give birth. From July to October each year they migrate from the rich summer feeding grounds in Antarctic waters. It is a time of fasting and importantly the new season calves build strength and a layer of blubber from their mothers' fat rich milk before the long swim south to colder waters. The calves in these images are new borns and up to 6 weeks old.
