Namibia - Diamonds & Dust

Sperrgebiet - Forbidden Zone

The abandoned diamond mining town of Kolmanskop is near the western coast and within the 'Sperrgebiet' or forbidden zone proclaimed in 1908 to prevent unauthorised trespass on these rich gem fields. Kolmanskop was abandoned in 1954 and is being taken over by the ever blowing sand.

High Dynamic Range Images

Kolmanskop's abandoned buildings are a magnet for landscape photographers who work the early and late light. A permit is required to enter the township during these hours.

Kolmanskop School

The historic Atlantic port of Lüderitz is 12 km from Kolmanskop. Dredges still work for alluvial diamonds in the seabed gravel.
